Saturday, 19th September saw the culmination of the Lime Tree Summer Sports – the presentation dinner.

Boules, putting, bowls and croquet are played in the village throughout the summer months, from Easter onwards.

Although many people play with friends and family solely for pleasure, others join in the singles and doubles competitions that are organised each year. The organisers partner people up so that the best players do not always play together. This is also a good way to meet people with whom one does not usually have much contact.

The categories included: singles and double boules; singles and doubles putting; singles and doubles bowls; singles and doubles croquet.

The winner of the croquet was John Crompton, who also won the doubles with partner Jenny Bessant. Brian Watkins won the singles boules, whilst Trevor Leader won the doubles with partner John Beasley.

For the putting, Brian Watkins, in his first year playing in the village, won the singles, by a single stroke on the 18th hole after a very closely fought contest. The winners for the doubles were Judith Carter and Ken Norman. Ken is also new to Lime Tree!

Kath Dixson stole the show for the single bowls, whilst husband and wife team Reg and Kathleen Stubbs won the doubles

And the prizes – the honour of having your name engraved on the trophies.

League matches are played over three months, followed by semi-finals and the finals. The finals always take place on a Wednesday in September, to be followed by a special three-course dinner on the Saturday night.

As usual, the dinner was well attended and Andy, our chef, provided a delicious meal. After the meal, the shields and cups were presented, the organisers duly thanked and the evening was rounded off by a fun quiz before everyone adjourned to the bar for a nightcap.
