Castle Village in the television spotlight.

Diary posted

10th July 2015

In June, our very own Castle Village was in the filming spotlight, when producers and cameramen  arrived at the village to capture the vibrant, sociable and happy environment it offers its residents. The filming was for Channel 4’s Dispatches programme, where the episode will address the increasing concern around isolation and loneliness in the elderly and how moving to a retirement village could be a solution to the problem.

Chair of the Residents Association,  Hilary McNair, was one of the stars of the show when she became involved in the day proceedings and interviews; she also had a chance to show the celebrity guests – Michael Buerk – around the beautiful grounds on the site.

Here is Hilary’s account of the day:

“The day started at 9am, with the arrival of the production team in wonderful sunshine, and the grounds of Castle Village looking their most colourful and serene. The crew were very friendly, and filming totally unobtrusive. As they toured the grounds and gardens, Michael Buerk met up and chatted with many residents during the morning, sharing an al fresco lunch with one group on the patio of the Mansion. He joined in a very competitive game of croquet, and saw others enjoying boules, putting and table tennis. There was lots of laughter, and fun.

Michael seemed genuinely impressed with both the concept of the retirement environment, and the way in which the principles of active, independent living had been applied. I had the distinct impression that he would have gladly applied for residency! I hope he was convinced that we were not a population of the so-called ‘idle rich’, but a vibrant, sensitive, and caring community.”

Dispatches airs on Channel 4, Monday 13th July, 8pm.
