Cedars’ Village Manager Colin Foulger has been with us for many years and is part of the furniture within the community. The residents know him well and appreciate his ‘open door’ policy, which means they can meet with him at any time.
We talked to Colin to find out a little bit more about him and why he loves being Cedars’ Village Manager.
Tell us how you came to work in the retirement living sector and why it is important to you?
I work in the independent living side of the business and come from working in hospitality and retail, so I felt this was a natural progression for me. I like running the village and making sure the service we provide to the residents is as good as possible.
What attracted you to Retirement Villages?
The role of Village Manager appeared to be the sort of role that I could do and excel in.
What skills or experience do you have that lends itself well to your role as Village Manager?
Customer service skills, empathy for people and an ability to get things done.
Describe your role in a nutshell?
Managing all aspects of the village from employing staff and making sure all the services we provide run smoothly to overseeing property maintenance.
What do you enjoy about your role?
I like feeling that the village is run by me and my staff.
What do find challenging?
Meeting our residents’ expectations can sometimes be challenging.
How do you work with residents to ensure that issues of interest or concern to them are addressed, and ensure transparency and harmony between the residents and Retirement Villages’ senior management?
By regularly meeting with the residents and making myself available if they want to talk to me.
Tell us about your staff and how they support you?
We work together as a team even though we have different roles. Many of our staff members have been with us for many years.
What are the main benefits you feel residents gain from living within your community?
Being with like-minded people, many of who share the same interests.
How do the residents help create a lively social scene within the village?
The residents work closely with us to provide a varied calendar of events.
Which are your most popular events or activities?
Our most popular events are the music evenings and events where our choir is involved.
What stands your village apart from the Retirement Villages’ bunch?
The grand house of The Cedars is very important to us.
