Avonpark Village residents are really enjoying the chance to get out to see some local attractions, thanks to the new weekly tour days suggested by the dedicated village minibus driver, Michael Leat.
Michael has been driving for the village for just over a year but has been commercially driving since 1978. He approached Nicky Potter, assistant village manager, with the suggestion of starting short trips out to local attractions on a Wednesday.
Michael said: “I enjoy driving for Avonpark largely because the residents enjoy the trips out and are very appreciative of getting out and about seeing new things. Most of the residents have not lived in the area before, so aren’t familiar with the local sights.”
So far there have been plenty of trips in the local area including a tour around Bradford on Avon, a trip up to the Westbury White Horse for the view of Wiltshire and the Caenhill locks in Devizes.
New tours are planned with National Trust destinations in mind along with trips further afield to the coast or Salisbury Cathedral.
Michael provides a running commentary while driving the bus, so everyone knows a bit about the local area and what they are seeing, and the new service has been really well received by villagers.
Avonpark resident, Mr Wilcox said of the tours: “Diverse and interesting, the driver (Michael) has a great local knowledge and most helpful.”
Mrs McGrath said: “Very enjoyable tours. Michael puts lots of thought into the tours.”
Nicky Potter, assistant manager at Avonpark said: “This was a great idea and we were really pleased to be able to put in place so quickly.
“The trips are a great opportunity for residents to make new friends on the trips out and see some local sights that they perhaps didn’t know about. The trips certainly provide a good talking point at our coffee mornings!”
