Lyn Halcrow was due to retire after her ‘special birthday’ last Summer. But she couldn’t bear to leave the job she’s made her own over the past 20 years.
“I wasn’t sure what I’d do without my residents so I opted to stay on,” said Lyn.
By staying on, she passed the 20th anniversary in her role as housekeeper at Gittisham Hill Park retirement village which was marked with a special presentation by village manager Carol White and a nomination for a Lifetime Achievement in Care award.
“Lyn calls the residents and staff here her family,” said Carol. “She’s so much a part of village life no one can imagine her not being here.”
Lyn began working at the village, on the outskirts of Honiton in Devon as a member of the domestic team. In 2002 she became the housekeeper. But to residents she is so much more.
“Lyn can often be found with her needle and thread in the lounge, surrounded by residents also sewing or knitting, while discussing ‘old times’ – one of her favourite phrases,” said Carol. “She’s a favourite with the residents – now we just have to persuade her to stay for another 20 years!”
