At Retirement Villages, we believe that wellbeing in later life goes beyond just healthcare—it’s about creating an environment where residents can live with purpose, stay socially connected, and maintain independence for as long as possible. Our approach moves beyond traditional care models, focusing on proactive support that enhances quality of life in every aspect.

Proactive and preventative approach

Unlike care homes, we are not CQC-registered and do not provide regulated care. Instead, our approach is built on prevention and empowerment. Our wellbeing advisors support residents through wellbeing and frailty assessments, helping them access the right resources, activities, and healthcare support when needed.

Rather than reacting to health issues after they arise, we focus on early intervention. Through a combination of social, physical, and emotional wellbeing initiatives, we aim to help residents stay independent for longer.

A holistic view of wellbeing

Wellbeing at Retirement Villages is about so much more than just health—our model ensures that residents have access to a well-rounded, fulfilling lifestyle that supports every aspect of their wellbeing:

·         Physical Health – Activities, gentle exercise classes, and opportunities to stay active

·         Mental & Emotional Wellbeing – Social connections, volunteering, and personal development

·         Purpose & Engagement – Opportunities for residents to contribute, engage, and remain independent

At the heart of our model is the belief that staying active—both physically and socially—is key to maintaining a high quality of life.

Working with healthcare professionals

While Retirement Villages is not a healthcare provider, we recognise the importance of strong connections with local NHS services, GPs, and care organisations. In some of our villages, GP surgeries operate on-site, and we work closely with chosen care providers to ensure that residents have seamless access to the right support when needed.

By strengthening these partnerships, we help residents navigate the healthcare system more effectively, ensuring they receive the guidance and resources required to maintain their wellbeing.

Encouraging social connection & purpose

Loneliness can have a significant impact on wellbeing, which is why we place a strong emphasis on social connection and meaningful engagement. From resident-led activity calendars to volunteering opportunities, we ensure that everyone has the chance to stay involved and connected.

One of our latest initiatives, the Resident and Community Volunteer Programme, is designed to strengthen these connections by bringing together residents and local community members. This creates opportunities for meaningful interactions that enhance both individual wellbeing and the overall vibrancy of our villages.

The future of wellbeing in retirement communities

The way we think about care and wellbeing in later life is changing. Rather than focusing solely on medical needs, retirement communities have a key role to play in preventative health and proactive support.

Some of the key areas driving this shift include:

  • A Shift Towards Wellbeing as a Foundation of Care – Prioritising holistic support over traditional healthcare models
  • Greater Collaboration with Health Services – Strengthening relationships with the NHS and primary care providers
  • Technology & Innovation – Exploring new ways to enhance independence while keeping human connection at the heart of our approach

Our goal is simple: to create an environment where people don’t just grow older—they thrive. Through a vibrant community, personalised support, and opportunities to stay active and engaged, we empower our residents to live life on their own terms.

Personalised wellbeing assessments

Our wellbeing team offers assessments before and during a resident’s tenancy to help shape personalised support. These assessments are designed to:

  • Understand individual needs, preferences, and expectations before a resident moves in
  • Provide a baseline for physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing to tailor support
  • Offer ongoing wellbeing and frailty assessments to track any changes and adapt services accordingly

Through these proactive assessments, our wellbeing advisors can offer personalised recommendations, from encouraging participation in social and physical activities to connecting residents with healthcare professionals, charities, or additional support services where needed.

By taking a personalised and preventative approach, we empower residents to make informed choices about their wellbeing, helping them stay independent, engaged, and supported throughout their time in our communities.

Empowering our residents

Wellbeing isn’t just about staying physically active—it’s about fostering a sense of purpose, engagement, and belonging.

Our approach is resident-led, ensuring that activities and initiatives reflect what residents truly want and need. Many take an active role in shaping their own activity calendars, working together to plan events that are meaningful and enjoyable.

Our community coordinators help bring the wider community into our villages, offering diverse activities, events, and partnerships with local groups, charities, and professionals. This helps create a dynamic, engaging social environment where residents can build strong connections.

To support new residents in settling in, we’ve introduced befrienders across several villages, making it easier to form friendships and get involved. Our volunteering programme also provides opportunities for residents to contribute their skills and time, fostering a strong sense of purpose and fulfilment.

At Retirement Villages, our mission is to create an environment where residents feel valued, supported, and empowered to lead fulfilling, active, and socially connected lives—on their own terms.

We’re redefining what it means to age well, ensuring that every resident has the opportunity to not just live longer, but live better.
