Moving home later in life is never an easy decision, especially after experiencing loss. For Olive, relocating to The Priory came after the passing of her husband, during a time when life understandably felt quieter and more difficult.
From Loss to Belonging
After losing her husband, Olive stayed in their family home for a couple of years. During that time, she began to realise how difficult living alone had become. “I couldn’t be on my own any longer,” she says.
It was around this time that Olive’s loyal companion, Zaza, became an essential source of comfort and support. “I was really quite ill with depression,” Olive explains. “That’s when I got Zaza, I couldn’t be without her.”
When Olive arrived at The Priory, she discovered a sense of warmth and understanding she hadn’t expected. “When I came here, people were very welcoming,” she says. “I’m still not very good at dealing with things that cause me a lot of anxiety but having people here who understand that has been an enormous help. I don’t think I could have found anywhere better.”

Finding Comfort in Everyday Moments
Olive didn’t make the move alone. By her side is Zaza, her much‑loved dog and constant companion. Together, they’ve settled into village life, a decision that has made a profound difference. In our latest video, Olive shares how becoming part of the community has helped her rediscover comfort, confidence and connection, while still living independently and at her own pace.
Being surrounded by friendly faces, supportive neighbours and a welcoming team has helped lift Olive’s spirits. Zaza plays a big part too. Daily walks around the village, casual chats with other residents, and the simple joy of having her dog close by have brought a renewed sense of routine and purpose. It’s these small but meaningful moments that make such a difference to wellbeing.
Feeling at Home Again
What Olive has found at The Priory isn’t just a new home, it’s a community. A place where people look out for one another, friendships form naturally, and no one feels alone as life changes. Her story is a powerful reminder that the right environment, combined with companionship both human and canine, can have a genuinely positive impact on mental health and happiness.
Her journey is a reminder that even after difficult chapters, there is still space for comfort, connection and quiet joy. Sometimes, it’s the companionship of those around us, whether human or four‑legged, that helps life feel full again.
