A passion for supporting people

I joined RVG at The Willowbury around two months ago as the Community and Wellbeing Manager, and I am really enjoying my role. Every day brings new challenges, new people and new opportunities to make a positive difference, which is something I find incredibly rewarding.

My background has always been rooted in supporting people and understanding what makes them feel happy, valued and fulfilled. I studied Psychology and Criminology at university and have previously worked in elderly care, where I particularly enjoyed supporting people living with dementia.

My experience with dementia is also very personal. I lived with my nan-in-law for five years and cared for her throughout her journey with dementia. It gave me a deep understanding of the importance of dignity, patience and compassion, and above all, seeing the person behind the condition.

Being an advocate for others

For the past eight years, I have also been a foster carer. My husband and I have two wonderful boys who have lived with us for eight years, and we have been their legal guardians for the past two.

Both fostering and caring for my nan-in-law have taught me the importance of advocacy. Making sure people are listened to, understood and supported to enjoy the best possible quality of life is something I feel incredibly passionate about.

It is something I bring with me every day in my role at The Willowbury.

Supporting life at The Willowbury

For me, wellbeing looks different for everyone, so a big part of my role is getting to know each individual and understanding what helps them feel their best.

That could be discovering a new exercise or hobby, enjoying the activities and experiences available at The Willowbury, or meeting new people and forming meaningful friendships. Aluna is an important part of that, giving residents and locals even more ways to embrace their wellbeing, stay active and enjoy doing the things they love.

Wellbeing can also mean supporting someone who is caring for their spouse or helping a resident find additional support when they need it. Ultimately, it is about helping people feel heard, supported and able to enjoy life in a way that feels right for them.

Making the most of later life

I am passionate about later life and strongly believe that everyone deserves an enriched and fulfilling retirement.

Retirement can be such an exciting new chapter. It can be an opportunity to make new friends, discover new hobbies, learn new skills and finally have more time for the things that may not have been possible earlier in life.

I particularly love organising events, activities and experiences that bring people together. Having previously worked in a retirement village, I have seen first-hand how people can thrive when they are part of a welcoming community where they feel connected, supported and valued.

Seeing residents discover new interests, form friendships and really embrace village life is one of the things that makes me smile most, and I’m looking forward to creating many more opportunities for that at The Willowbury.
