After living in Sutton for 51 years and then moving to a care-home in Croydon, 87-year-old Michael Dolbear and his wife decided they needed to move somewhere that was right for them.
The Dolbear’s daughter came to the rescue and searched around for the perfect living environment that was most suited to their needs. After viewing Avonpark and witnessing the wide range of retirement property options including studios, one and two-bedroom apartments, houses and designated care facilities all set within beautiful grounds – she knew this was the place for her parents.
Michael Dolbear was delighted to have the opportunity to live independently, renting his own apartment at Avonpark, whilst his wife could receive the attention she required living in the care home within the same village.
Michael said: “Since May 2018, I have been living in a lovely one-bedroom apartment with a lounge, kitchen and bathroom. My wife is living in the nursing section at Fountain Place and they look after her very well. I would recommend coming here, especially if you would like the safety and security of care facilities, I’m very happy here.”
A perfect location
The idyllic retirement location was another reason that prompted the move.
Avonpark is set in 15 acres of landscaped grounds and is just six miles from the popular spa town of Bath. Aside from an extensive social calendar here in the village, there are so many options beyond this if residents are looking for a change of scenery.
Michael explained: “It’s very beautiful here. We overlook the Avon Valley and there are a lot of nice restaurants outside the village – the village pub is very popular too! We are surrounded by a very forthcoming town so there is plenty to occupy yourself with.”
Renting – an ideal solution
Renting was the perfect option for Michael after the couple sold their house and released equity. With Mrs Dolbear in the on-site care home, he can visit her all the time and keeps his options open should they need to move somewhere else in the future.
Michael said: “My daughter lives locally and was able to complete all the negotiations, it was a success and I’m really pleased we chose this option.”
Enjoying the atmosphere
At Avonpark there’s an extensive social calendar created by the residents for the residents but with the absolute support of the staff at Avonpark.
Michael emphasised: “This is a large inhabitation that has a lot going on and it’s nice to know activities are there if I want to join in – I have been known to attend Bar Night on Tuesdays and Fridays. And there’s a joke about trying to get me involved in chair yoga – but I’ve declined that one for the moment!”
Naturally, settling into the village took some time to get used to but now the pair are familiar with their surroundings, they’re both happy living in their new retirement properties.
Michael explained: “The staff also add value to living here as they’re most helpful and friendly.”
He added: “My wife has improved considerably and we’re both pleased we moved here – so are my family, my grandchildren have even nicknamed my apartment ‘grandpa’s pad’.
