Castle Village on Channel 4’s Dispatches

Last night, our wonderful Hertfordshire based Castle Village featured in Channel 4’s award-winning current affairs program, Dispatches.

The purpose of the show was to investigate loneliness and vulnerability within the elderly population and to see whether the retiring generation can rely on the state to support them.

At present, there are 10 million people in UK over the age of 65. As statistics show, the number is predicted to nearly double to 19 million by 2050. Adapting to the new situation will put a strain on economic, social and political growth of the country – especially the State Pension and National Health Service.

Michael Buerk presented the 30-minute programme and investigated the options people have when planning their retirement. This included our very own Castle Village, which was used as an example of an independent way of living – where residents create a vibrant community and participate in various sports, social events and other kinds of activities. Retirement Villages Group Ltd offers its residents a fulfilling lifestyle, whilst also providing the reassurance that care is available, now or in the future.

The arrival of the TV crew at Castle Village a few weeks ago, when Channel 4 visited to film, triggered lots of excitement across the village. Click here to read Hilary McNair, Chair of the Residents Association, recall the excitement and how those residents who took part on the day, enjoyed lunching and playing croquet with Mr. Buerk.
