Blagdon Retirement Village In Somerset

During the month, three of the newly formed, or reformed, activities started up, there was a talk by an outside speaker and we had our customary Summer Party, but this time called a Summer Picnic.

Summer Picnic

For a few years we have had a summer party in one form or another, but this year the name was changed to Summer Picnic. It was held on the 9th of June, the Queen’s official birthday, so the afternoon began with a Royal toast. Then the outdoor games began – target boules, target putting and target lawn darts – before we took a break for tea.   Previously we have bought in fresh sandwiches and cakes from a local supplier, but this time we made use of our new cook who prepared a superb buffet to satisfy all tastes. The afternoon ended with a revival of horse racing with human jockeys ‘riding’ hobby horses and their moves determined by the throw of large dice. It was hilarious and will surely be repeated in future years. Prizes for the various games were handed out and the party ended for another year. It was judged to have been a huge success.

Ageing Well

At the beginning of the month the first formal Ageing Well, one hour exercise class, was held. This proved to be a not very strenuous but very beneficial activity. Some 40 residents took part with enthusiasm.

Talk

The CEO of the Taunton Association for the Homeless gave a very interesting talk about the work of this local charity and how it is helping to improve the lives of the homeless, not only by providing food and shelter but by helping them back into work. Many people had been able to improve their lives as a result.

Poetry Group

The first gathering of the Poetry Group was held. The main purpose was to determine the future format of future meetings and it was agreed that each would follow a particular theme. On this occasion a variety of poems were read and in one case recited from memory. We keep discovering new talents among our residents!

Music Appreciation Group

The Music Appreciation Group will only be meeting quarterly. During this initial meeting excerpts of classical pieces were played, accompanied by snippets of information about the composers and the background to the work in question.
