Blagdon Retirement Village In Somerset

After a fairly quiet January following the festive season, Blagdon Village started to get back into its normal rhythm in February.  We had a talk, another of resident John Kinahan’s Musical Memories, and a return visit from local choir, The New Horizon Singers.  There was also a private party for a golden wedding anniversary.

Talk

We don’t mind pushing the political boundaries, and we do live in a democracy so a smaller audience than usual listened with interest to Liz Payne-Amadi.  She is chair of the Communist Party of Britain and lives locally.  Needless to say we found her talk controversial and it created a lively discussion.

Musical Memories

Resident John Kinahan has a large collection of CDs featuring big band music as well as a good selection of musicals and classical music.  He has entertained us on several occasions over the years with carefully chosen tracks to give us a cross section.  He was assisted by resident Dudley Price, who downloaded the chosen tracks to his laptop, which he connected into our AV system, and by resident Douglas Raven who is a very close friend of John’s.

New Horizon Singers

Here in Taunton, we are fortunate to have an excellent amateur ladies choir, The New Horizon Singers.  They have entertained us before, so we were delighted to welcome them for a return visit, the first of many hopefully.  They sang a selection from their wide repertoire, to a large and very appreciative audience.  Included this time, were two songs performed in a very confident and competent manner by 13 year old Liam Atherton, a pupil of the accompanist.  The singers collect for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and we were delighted that we were able to raise £150 at the event.

Golden Wedding Anniversary

Chris and Rich Turner, who have been residents here since early 2008, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a private party for family and friends, including some fellow residents.  Musical entertainment was provided by Mike and Mandy from Gloucester, the same duo that we have had here before.  It was a superb party all round.
