December was all about the festive season for retirees at Blagdon village. The month consisted of a range of activities including carols, a Christmas Party, Christmas Day lunch, and a New Year’s Eve event.
Online Services Talk
The Practice Manager of the local GP surgery, where most of the residents are registered, paid a welcomed return visit. This time her main topic was the services available online. The residents enjoyed learning about what was available for them!
For the last few years resident Joyce Morgan has held an afternoon of singalong carols for the Village. As always, residents sang the well-known and much-loved carols with gusto. Regrettably, Joyce has now taken a well-earned retirement but resident, Kath Bentham, an accomplished pianist, will be continuing the tradition in the future as well as taking over the reins of the twice monthly singalong group from Joyce.
Every year since the Village opened there has been a Christmas Party and this year was no different! Blagdon Village’s cook provided a buffet supper and while residents were enjoying that, a raffle draw was held. The lucky winners were rewarded with universal gift vouchers ranging in value from £5 to £25. The versatile musical duo Mike and Mandy, who have visited Blagdon Village before, provided the music set for dancing to rock and roll, twist and similar lively tunes. It was an excellent event where fun was had by all.
Christmas Day Lunch
A full Christmas Day Lunch is always provided for anyone that’s not going away. This year, more than 25 residents enjoyed the meal cooked by the cook and served up by his happy staff. The traditional turkey or beef was followed by the Christmas pudding that some residents had a hand in mixing in November. It was delicious, and many residents commented it was ‘the best they had ever tasted’.
New Year’s Eve
For the occasion, Blagdon Village’s chef provided a buffet supper whilst residents took part in the traditional quiz on world events in the preceding 12 months. This was followed by another shorter quiz identifying sitcoms from the characters named – the residents had great fun, particularly the prize winners! The fun didn’t stop there, the residents also enjoyed some comedy sketches and some lively dancing to CDs. The fun evening meant that ‘Blagdon’s Midnight’ was celebrated at 11pm instead.
