Pancakes, themed dinners and a spot of French at Avonpark!

18th March 2019

No month is the same as the next for retirees at Avonpark, in Wiltshire and this time around residents have been enjoying a flurry of themed dinners and have even been learning a new language!

French Group

Another addition to the existing thriving programme of social activities has arrived thanks to former French teacher and resident, Mrs Enid Horsel, who has started a French Group.

Residents join together and learn French every Monday afternoon, where the session rounds off with a cup of tea!

Enid, who has lived at the village for three years, has an Honours degree in French and spent many years teaching at Merrywood Grammar School, in Bristol.

She went on to teach at the City of Bath Girls School, which became Hayesfield Girls’ School, and spent five years living in France, where she taught English.

She said: “I wanted to start a group at the village and started chatting to other residents who can also speak French. I thought it would be a lovely idea to start a group where I can share and teach French to my friends here at Avonpark.”

The group officially started in mid-February, and the number of attendees is expected to grow in the coming weeks.

Pub Lunch

A pub lunch is a classic outing enjoyed by all Brits – especially those at Avonpark! The residents took a trip to the Boathouse in Bradford-on-Avon and will most definitely be making this outing a regular occurrence.

Pancake Day

Avonpark’s Sous Chef did not disappoint on Shrove Tuesday. Villagers enjoyed a magnificent display of pancakes including some that were drizzled with syrup and topped with mixed berries and bananas.

Valentine’s Supper Club

Residents felt the love on Valentine’s Day by enjoying each other’s company and some wonderfully presented, tasty dishes.

A mouth-watering menu of home-made chicken pie with a garlic and thyme mash potato, roasted baby carrots, kale and red wine jus was followed by delicious After 8 cheesecake, rounded off with coffee and mints.

Residents also received the VIP treatment during the supper, with waitress service and heart-shaped petal decorations on the tables.
