Work has begun on extending an established care home so creating a new retirement village for the area.

There has been a care home on the Moat House site, on the fringes of Great Dunmow, in Essex, for a number of years. A new 60-bed, purpose built home was opened 18 months ago, offering residential, nursing and dementia care.

Now 26 one and two bedroom apartments, along with a clubhouse for the exclusive use of the apartment residents, are to be added.

Together these additions will extend the living options, creating a retirement village in the true sense of the phrase, in keeping with the other 13 locations in the portfolio of owners Retirement Villages Group Ltd.

Sarah Burgess, Sales and Marketing Director for Retirement Villages said: “The building work at the Moat House is the next step in the development of the site into a retirement village. We believe the extension of the Moat House will prove a real bonus to local people, increasing the living options available for them to consider later in life.”

The 26 apartments will be spread across three storeys. Outside will be a terraced area enjoying views over the extensive gardens. The clubhouse will provide a private area for meetings, get togethers, activities and functions.

Construction staff are now on site working on the next phase of the development. Work is expected to take around a year with the first residents moving in next spring.
