The luxury retirement village, Thamesfield in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, has appointed a new village manager. Cheryl George has lived in Henley for 13 years and had always admired the beautiful village from the other side of the river – and now she works there!
Previously, Cheryl has worked within Marketing Research Agencies, Television Production and Photography, which she still does alongside her new role.
Cheryl explained: “I wanted to work in a retirement village as my photography has shown me how much I love being around people. I realised I loved the customer service aspect of it, I am a real people-person and I genuinely enjoy making people happy.”
After three weeks of working at the village, Cheryl is already relishing everything that the role has to offer; exploring new challenges every day and interacting with staff and residents.
She said: “The staff are really lovely. After experiencing self-employment, it’s great for me to be surrounded by sympathetic colleagues who all work closely together. The residents are so friendly and welcoming too. It’s so great to see they all love where they live, and I’ll ensure this continues.
As an outgoing individual, Cheryl described why she’s a great fit for the role as Village Manager: “I’m friendly, approachable and I try to ensure I always walk around with a smile on my face! I genuinely care about the well-being of others and I’m a good listener, so I hope residents and staff will be comfortable about coming to me with any issues.”
She added: “I’m aware I’m looking after people in their retirement, and I believe this is the time when they should be really enjoying a lovely life. This is why they’ve moved to Thamesfield and I want to ensure they’re receiving the excellent service they deserve.”
Having lived in Henley for over a decade, Cheryl is aware of how much the area has to offer and the beautiful Thamesfield retirement home is ideally placed to take advantage of all the area has to offer.
She said: “Henley is the perfect location. There’s so much to do beyond the retirement home, including a cinema and a theatre – and with our concierge service, it’s easily accessible for the residents.”
Cheryl continued: “The retirement village itself is absolutely stunning, the location is right on the riverfront and the landscaped gardens are gorgeous. The village has so much to give, weekly shopping can be arranged and the nursing home on site is a really reassuring factor for residents.”
With a huge social scene on site, Cheryl has loved seeing how the residents get involved.
She said: “The residents help to create the social scene by suggesting their ideas and being incredibly welcoming to new villagers. We have such a range of activities that residents can join in if they wish to, including exercise classes, games and a variety of musical visitors. Our boat trips, pub lunches and our Cocktail Hour are among the highly attended activities.”
Using her fresh pair of eyes, Cheryl has already been proactive in getting to know the residents and finding out what they want from her.
She explained: “I try to pop down to the coffee mornings and visit the retirement properties to chat to residents to find out how they are, what they’re enjoying, and if there’s anything they need. I want to be a face that people can see regularly. I’m happy to bring new ideas and listen to them too.”
Cheryl has bright ideas for the future and she intends to make the most of the location. She’s already looking at adding seating by the river and a summer house project, as requested by residents.
Cheryl said: “I feel very lucky and privileged to work here, I’m so excited about this new role and I hope to make Thamesfield Village a better place to live and work.”
