The Priory Residents Diary

We have always said our residents are our best ambassadors. That’s why we’ve dedicated these pages to the residents of The Priory to fill with news, views and events, in the hope it will give you a genuine insight in village living Retirement Villages’ style.

April 2012 Update

The perfect greeting

Forgive us for indulgently including a flower photo on here but our amarylis is a well-loved part of the village. It sits in the entrance atrium providing a magnificent greeting for our visitors – and for us residents each day. It grows bigger and more flamboyant every year and never fails to attract comment.

Open day visitors

We were delighted to spend time with some new faces at our most recent open day. The event provided an opportunity for us to show off The Priory to those who may be interested in living here. By the time we’d welcomed people into the Forum and taken them for a stroll through the grounds most were smitten. Showing round people who aren’t familiar with our village gives us the chance to see it through fresh eyes and realise how lucky we are. At this time of year, with the blossom out, buds on the trees and early flowers poking through the soil, it really does look stunning.

Movie Romance

With Woody Allen directing and Kathy Bates in the cast, Midnight in Paris came with a pedigree. And we weren’t disappointed. The film was the latest to be shown at our regular movie nights. We take it in turns to suggest films to watch ensuring there’s a good variety on the list.
We don’t claim to be expert movie critics but we always adjourn to the bar afterwards with a drink to share our views and argue over the finer points of the storyline, acting and directing!

March 2012 Update

Welcome to the team

We are very pleased to welcome to The Priory our first RV Care Assistant, Mark Sharenger. Mark is multi-talented it seems. As well as having lots of experience working with children and adults, he is also a qualified horticulturalist, which could be handy with our five acre site! He’s going to drive our mini bus when needed as well.

He’s currently undergoing training and getting to know the team and the people who live here.

Spring flowers

Our gardens are a hive of activity at the moment, with both the maintenance team and members of the gardening club out in the spring sunshine with a backdrop of daffodils and cherry blossoms in bud.

There are several projects ongoing. The lavender beds are being replanted. They are wonderful for attracting bees and butterflies during the summer months,

The entrance is being spruced up with some new flowers and shrubs to give a colourful welcome to visitors and guests.

The new raised beds have been earmarked by some green fingered residents as the perfect place to grow vegetables, salads and herbs – with minimal bending required! For those who prefer not to get their hands dirty seating areas and a bird bath have been added so everyone can enjoy the surroundings.

January 2012 Update

Happy new year!

New Year started in style here at The Priory.
With most the residents celebrating in their own way on New Year’s Eve, we made the most of an empty diary on January 1 to enjoy a New Year’s luncheon. It was a lovely way to welcome in 2012.

Plans for 2012

The beginning of a new year sees us all reaching for our calendars to start planning things to look forward to in the coming months.
The Residents Association got together over coffee and cakes to put together an event diary for 2012.
There were all kinds of ideas put forward including outings, charity events, get togethers and guest visitors.
You’ll get chance to read more about them here as they happen!

Local knowledge pays off

We went from the English Riviera to the Italian Rivieria in one lunchtime a couple of weeks ago.
Following a wonderful Italian themed meal we sat back to sip Limoncello liqueur and nibble Amaretti biscuits while exercising our white matter in a Village quiz.
The subject was the local area, something few of us had an excuse for not being experts in!
We didn’t score 100 per cent but we did have a giggle, which is more important!

War Horse Premier

We were delighted to be able to see War Horse, the new film lauded by reviewers, before it was on general release.
We were invited by the local Rotary Club to an exclusive showing at our local cinema.
It’s a wonderful film, very moving and prompted much discussion afterwards.

December 2011 Update

Festival success

The Priory was delighted to be involved with Abbfest, an annual local festival which draws in visitors from right across the area.

We helped sponsor the event and went along too, to show our support.

Anne Widdecombe was one of the guests and she was an absolute hoot – very entertaining as those of us who watched her on Strictly Come Dancing knew she would be!

Several of our residents were at the event and took time out of enjoying the festival to meet people who popped along to our little area – as you can see from the photos which show our residents association chairperson Ursula Hunt on her own and Mr and Mrs Gibbs with Andrew Edwards.

We had some wonderful feedback from the organisers and those attending.
