The Grade II listed Mansion House which sits at the heart of Castle Village is nothing short of magnificent. It is rightly established as the centre point of the retirement village, housing extensive country club style facilities including a wood panelled restaurant, meeting room, library, snooker room, bar and conservatory.
And the 28 acres of grounds are no less impressive. The perfectly manicured lawn falls away from the Mansion House leading to a host of features. There’s a sunken rose garden, perfect for quiet contemplation; flower lined paths for wandering along; the tennis courts perfect for a summer’s afternoon; wooded areas for shady strolls; patios for drinking coffee and reading the newspaper; and Castle Village’s hidden gem, the award-winning Japanese garden centred around a carp lake and summerhouse pavilion.
The village is designed for senior living, adjacent to the famous Berkhamsted Golf Course and set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, yet sits just a mile from the centre of Berkhamsted, a bustling market town with a number of boutiques and services.
Since the first residents moved in in 2000, Castle Village in Hertfordshire has become a thriving retirement community with more than 50 regular events, activities and special interest groups on the calendar. The culmination is Marquee Week, held each year in July and featuring a dizzying number of events from quizzes to barbecues, black tie dinners to choir performances.
There is a range of retirement homes available at the village. A number of apartments can be found in the Mansion House itself, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Original features have been retained where possible. Other apartments are housed in blocks grouped, with a range of cottages and bungalows, in the grounds.
