Presidential Easter tradition comes to Lime Tree Village

31 Mar 2007

Every Easter America’s first family opens the gates of The White House and invites local children to enjoy a tradition dating back more than 130 years.

Now the Easter egg roll is coming to one of Warwickshire’s most historic white houses - Cawston House the centrepiece of Lime Tree Village, Dunchurch near Rugby.

Residents of the area’s only village exclusively for the over 55s have added the White House tradition to the programme of Easter events being staged on Easter Saturday (April 7).

But rather than using wooden spoons from George W Bush’s kitchen to race hard boiled eggs outside the landmark building, the residents will be using golf clubs to pitch the eggs along an obstacle course.

“Apparently since President Lincoln’s day American children have flocked to bash hard boiled eggs down the course in the grounds of the White House over Easter,” said Pam Osborne, chairman of the Lime Tree Village Residents’ Association. “We thought wooden spoons might be a bit ambitious for us - too much bending down - hence the golf clubs. But we reckon we’ll have just as much fun.”

The residents have organised a host of activities besides the egg roll including an Easter bonnet parade, egg painting, a treasure hunt for visiting youngsters and afternoon tea with hot cross buns and chocolate nest cakes.
