A stunning Japanese garden has helped Castle Village in Berkhamstead scoop a national award recognising the best in landscaped gardens.
Castle Village was named a Gold Award winner at this year’s New Homes Gardens Awards after impressing judges in the Best Landscaped Luxury Retirement Development Division.
The 28 acre site is set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the edge of the Hertfordshire town. The grounds feature a perfectly-manicured central lawn which is often used for genteel games of croquet, a rectangular rose garden, tennis courts and the Japanese garden complete with central water feature and coy carp. The village also boasts stunning views across the Chilterns and is close to National Trust woodland at Ashridge.
The judges of the award, made up of garden architects, writers, builders and horticulturalists, which is run in association with Express Newspapers, were particularly impressed with the ambience in the garden at Castle Village.
On presenting the award, the judges commented: “This landscape is graceful living with a country house feel that is very well done. This garden has a great feeling about it with an excellent management approach to the various garden areas.”
Cliff Meyler, operations director for Retirement Villages which owns Castle Village, received the award at a glittering ceremony at London’s Royal Garden Hotel from ‘Allo ‘Allo actress Vicki Michelle.
“I was delighted to receive the award on behalf of Castle Village,” said Cliff. “Retirement Villages prides itself on providing the very best surroundings for our villagers and their visitors. A lot of hard work has gone into creating and maintaining the beautiful gardens at the village. It is lovely to have that work recognised on a national level.”
