The historic rural town of Somerton in Somerset is the setting for Wessex Mews, a continuing care retirement community comprising a 45 bed care home and a further 20 suites and apartments.
Part of the project will involve the regeneration of neighbouring retail units, further enhancing the town and providing additional facilities for residents of Wessex Mews and Somerton as a whole.
The residential accommodation will be broken down into eight extra care units, 12 assisted living suites and a 45 bed residential care home over three floors.
The care home rooms have all been designed to be generously proportioned and configured to offer views over either the courtyard garden or the surrounding countries.
Assisted living units are for those who require some care but have sufficient independence to live in an apartment while extra care are self contained apartments providing autonomy for more independent people.
Existing retail units on West Street will be redeveloped, providing high quality shop fronts and a new pedestrian archway. The current streetscape will be improved as part of the programme.
Secure, private parking will be provided and the scheme will also benefit from landscaped gardens and additional communal facilities for the residents.
Planning permission for Wessex Mews was granted in November 2011. Retirement Villages is now considering the progression of the development.
