You can rent your new home until your previous property is sold and, through our assisted purchase scheme and personal manager service, we will help you to procure the sale of your former property.

This option applies to new homes only.

Case Study

Buying a house is probably the biggest and most significant purchase you will ever make – and when it comes to your last move and buying your final home in later life, it becomes an even bigger issue.

Will it be the right move? Will I like it? What if I don’t?

More and more developers, particularly those who build specialised property for this age group, are providing a range of options to allow people to sample their prospective new home before making a full commitment and putting their own property on the market.

Short and long term rentals are becoming more and more commonplace. Try Before You Buy schemes are also growing in popularity.

Mrs Joan PalmerMrs Joan Palmer, 80, from Budock Water, rented her new home before taking the plunge and moving lock stock and barrel. Here are her thoughts on how this approach helped her to come to terms with what was a monumental decision to take at her time of life:

“My three bedroom detached bungalow sat on a slope and had a beautiful large garden. I loved it. But I kept having more and more falls and was in and out of hospital. I had a spell in a residential home but realised that wasn’t for me.

“It was my daughter who found out about the apartments in Tregony at the Roseland Parc retirement development. She visited and liked it and suggested I come and see for myself. I put down a deposit and moved in three or four days later through the rental scheme. I remember sitting in the hall weeping with pleasure because I immediately felt so at home.

“I chose to rent initially because I honestly didn’t know if I was going to like it. Also, the economic situation was and still is so uncertain and I didn’t know what was the best course of action at the time. Renting gave me the breathing space to try it out first without burning all my bridges.

“Now I’m settled in, I’m in the process of buying this apartment and selling my old property. I’m pleased I took my time and didn’t rush into buying straightaway. I’ve tried out my new home and the surroundings and like it very much. I feel happy and content in my own mind that I’m doing the right thing.”

The move has had many benefits. Mrs Palmer explained: “I’ve already made new friends and joined in a number of functions here including the quiz night and a party night over Christmas. I’ve made full use of the restaurant and watched some of my neighbours outside on the lawn playing bowls. The great thing is, you never feel on your own.”

* Mrs Palmer rented a one bedroom fully serviced apartment at Roseland Parc. The rental cost also covered all her meals, a weekly bed linen change, all laundry and housework needs and a daily visit from a member of staff in the village.

Rental and Try Before You Buy (where you rent a fully furnished property and use it as if it’s your own for a weekend or longer stay) are becoming increasingly popular options among the older age group. They are also a firm favourite with families who are reluctant to sell their parents’ existing home until they are certain it is the right decision for them.
